Selects
Charlotte as Home of NASCAR Hall of Fame
DAYTONA
BEACH, Fla. (March 6, 2006)
– The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) today
announced that it has selected Charlotte, N.C., to be the home of its
Hall of Fame. The NASCAR Hall of Fame, which will be a state of the art
facility capturing the spirit of the sport, will honor the NASCAR icons
and create an enduring tribute to the drivers, crew members, team owners
and others that have impacted the sport in the past, present and yet to
come.

Thanks
for NASCAR hall effort - from Brian France
March 10, 2006 Daytona Beach
News-Journal Editorial Letter
On
behalf of NASCAR, and as its chairman and CEO, I take this opportunity to
extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for the outstanding effort put
forth by the Daytona Beach Hall of Fame Committee. The level of
commitment, support, enthusiasm and expertise displayed by the Daytona Beach
group was exemplary. The bottom line is: Daytona Beach gave its very best
shot and has much to be proud of.
Selecting a hall of fame has been one of the most
difficult decisions NASCAR has ever had to make, a much more difficult
decision than we ever anticipated. This was an extremely competitive process
and one that was close to the very end.
Daytona Beach's proposal was compelling. The design and
tie-in to Daytona USA were very appealing. Daytona Beach's strong NASCAR
roots and history, along with the presence of Daytona International
Speedway, were given every consideration. The support and enthusiasm from
the city, state, the Speedway and the committee were indeed very strong.
Their passion for this project kept them in the race until the very end.
In particular, NASCAR is grateful for the leadership of
Mayor Yvonne Scarlett-Golden; John Saboor, executive director of the Central
Florida Sports Commission; Frank Bruno, chairman of the Volusia County
Council; and George Mirabal, president, Daytona Beach/Halifax Area Chamber
of Commerce. Their commitment was evident from the very beginning.
Daytona Beach could not have a better ambassador or more
staunch supporter than Mayor Scarlett-Golden. She has done wonderful things
for the city and is a true friend of NASCAR.
NASCAR would also like to thank and recognize Gov. Jeb
Bush and the Legislature for their strong support, in particular with the
introduction of the NASCAR specialty license plate for the residents of
Florida.
NASCAR expresses its deep gratitude to Daytona Beach for
all it does and continues to do for our sport.
BRIAN FRANCE, Daytona Beach

Statement by A. J. Robinson, President of Central Atlanta Progress in
reference to the announcement of the NASCAR
Hall of Fame being awarded to Charlotte, NC.
ATLANTA
–
It has been a long race, but now it’s over.
We believe Atlanta and
Georgia made an extremely strong showing. Along the way, I think we
surprised some people with the strength of our resolve and resourcefulness.
I want to personally
thank Governor Perdue and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin for their
unwavering support. Our elected officials truly understood the promise that
this project held for this State and this City and their leadership brought
us a long way.
Thanks also goes to our
partners in putting the bid together … especially Sam Williams and the Metro
Atlanta Chamber, the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Atlanta
Development Authority, Fulton County and its development authority and the
Georgia Department of Economic Development.
Further, I want to
commend all the members of our bid committee for their diligence, guidance
and leadership, especially Mark Lazarus the President of Turner
Entertainment Group who chaired the committee with Scott Wilfong of SunTrust
Bank. Without their support, we wouldn’t have made it this far.
Add
one – Race is over
Phil Kent, the Chairman
of CAP and Chairman of Turner Broadcasting gave us free rein and tons of
corporate support to help put our bid package together. We couldn’t have
done it had it not been for his backing.
The members of our
business community, especially our local NASCAR sponsors, have supported our
efforts in every way humanly possible. They were a driving force in
Atlanta’s efforts.
We think it’s fitting to strongly reiterate what we put on the table.
Our offer to NASCAR included …
-
the very best tourist related location in
the southeast
- a
strong, viable publicly backed financial plan
- an
intriguing and unique design located on Centennial Olympic Park
- a
totally supportive political base from the City and State
- a
platform to grow and sustain new and additional NASCAR fans
- the
number one NASCAR TV market in the country, and
- a
place among international corporate branding giants like Coca-Cola & CNN.
We believed that
all this matched and surpassed virtually everything that NASCAR was looking
for.
Add
two – Race is over
In the end, the only
other thing we could have done was change our city’s name to Charlotte, but
that wasn’t on the table. We believe in the viability of Downtown Atlanta
and the momentum it has to offer. That’s why we chose to get into what we
were sure would be a hard fought race. There will be other opportunities.
And we will pursue them as strongly as this one.
From Atlanta, we salute
the efforts of all our competitors and the bids they put forward. Every one
of us had many special things that originally brought us to this elite
bargaining table.
We
wish NASCAR and Charlotte much success with the hall of fame.

Statement
from Ed Clark Regarding Hall of Fame decision
“I congratulate the city of Charlotte for grabbing the brass ring in the
race for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. With so much of the NASCAR industry
located in the Charlotte area, there will obviously be a great number of
partners working together to make the NASCAR Hall of Fame succeed.
“I salute Governor
Perdue, Mayor Franklin and the entire Atlanta bid committee for a job
well done. From the time the idea originated here in Atlanta, right up
until today, a large number of people worked diligently together with a
common goal in mind. There is no doubt that Atlanta brought many
attributes to the table that many other cities could not offer, and the
Hall of Fame would’ve been an overwhelming success here.”
– Ed Clark, president and general manager of Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Some Wonder If Daytona Beach
Should Have Done More
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --
Daytona Beach officially learned it will not be
the home of the NASCAR Hall Of Fame on Monday
afternoon. Racing officials announced it would
be located in Charlotte instead.
Charlotte pledged $137
million to lure the hall, almost double Daytona.
Monday, some were questioning the strategy used
by Daytona Beach officials.
The black flag fell about
9:15 Monday morning for the folks at the
Speedway. That's when they heard the news from
NASCAR. Now it's time to second guess the game
plan, as many wonder if Daytona should have done
more to hook the hall.
"On behalf of Daytona Beach,
I'd like to congratulate Charlotte," said
Daytona Beach Mayor Yvonne Scarlett-Golden,
conceding defeat.
She was part of the driving
force to reel in the Hall of Fame, but sometimes
it seemed she was one of the only ones taking
the bid seriously.
"I think in the early
periods, we could have done better," she said.
About a year ago, Scarlett-Golden
asked for more money to fund the hall. She was
denied by the city commission. Instead, money
for the hall was to come from the sale of a
NASCAR license plate. Charlotte secured their
bid with public bonds.
"We don't know what they were
thinking and how important public money was,"
said George Mirabal, Daytona Chamber of
Commerce.
Under Daytona's plan, the
hall would start with debt. Charlotte's plan has
the taxpayer assuming the debt. Make no mistake,
the hall is all about making money.
Keep in mind, Charlotte has a
population 10 times larger than Daytona Beach.
They have a much bigger tax base. The Speedway
said most of the drivers and team owners live in
North Carolina. That also affected the decision.
Now, it's up to Daytona to
deal with it.
"It would have been a great
show for us. We'll rebound from it. Looking
forward to a great Bike Week and the rest of
racing season," said Daytona International
Speedway President Robin Braig.
The NASCAR license plate is
in limbo now, because it was contingent on
getting the Hall of Fame.

The Associated Press
CHARLOTTE, N.C

Atlanta offered a better deal and did everything but change its name

attraction.
Also fueling the bitter loss are comments by NASCAR team owner Felix
